what price decadence?

Silver Diner Receipt

At the Silver Diner, decadence apparently can be found for just $4.99.

Sweet sassy, that’s awesome. What did you order to get this excellent receipt?

Nice. I would like some decadence on a plate as well, please.

The important question was whether decadence lived up to its name…

Dari ordered the Chocolate Brownie Decadence — basically a sundae with a brownie. It did look pretty decadent.

I don’t dispute that decadence has been devalued to $4.99. That much about our society makes sense.

But if we’re to use that sliding scale, wouldn’t that also require us to mark the price of bread pudding lower? Although I’m sure it remains an enjoyable taste treat, bread pudding isn’t even in the same emotional ZIP code as decadence.

Mark it down to, say, $0.39 and you’ve got a sale.

I should note that the “Mango Madness” Snapple flavor is sometimes printed as “MADNESS” on receipts with the corresponding price. (I’ll share photographic evidence if and when I obtain a receipt like this.)

I may eventually write a book and name it At What Price Decadence and Madness? $4.99 and $1.39, Respectively. (Or maybe Sufjan Stevens will use that title for his next album.)
