st. mary's
I keep meaning to blog about this, and for whatever reason I keep putting it off. Anyway, one month later…
Last month, Rob and I decided to embark on a 24-hour mini-escape. We left work a little early on a Friday, checked into a bed and breakfast in southern Maryland for a one-night stay and headed out to Solomons Island for a seafood dinner. The next day, after a big breakfast, we did a little exploring, first visiting Elms Beach Park and then heading over to St. Mary’s City.
St. Mary’s City is one of the oldest British settlements in the U.S. and the original capital of Maryland. Some of the original structures have been rebuilt, while frames have been erected to show where other buildings once stood. Like Williamsburg, St. Mary’s City is populated by a variety of costumed interpreters who demonstrate different aspects of 17th century life and answer visitors’ questions. My favorite part was definitely the recently reconstructed print house, complete with an old-school printing press, cases of lead type and an interpreter who let me have a go at printing a document.
