National Portrait Gallery

A side-benefit of going to see the Stephen Colbert portrait at the National Portrait Gallery is that I finally went to the National Portrait Gallery. The building, which also houses the Smithsonian American Art Museum, was under massive renovation for years and reopened to great fanfare in the summer of 2007. I’d been meaning to check both out but had never gotten around to it.

It’s a gorgeous space, and I really only saw a fraction of it. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, I’d recommend checking out American war bond posters from World War I. There’s also an exhibit of Katharine Hepburn portraits that I missed this time around, but must make time to visit before it closes in September.

I still need to go to two Smithsonian museums to fulfill one of my 101 Things entries — it sounds like I should check this out!

Haha — Hey, it’s efficient! And it’s well worth a visit.
