fisher towers
(In which we resume the recap of last month’s vacation to Colorado and Utah…)
After our morning hike through part of the Devil’s Garden Trail at Arches National Park, we decided to take the scenic route back to Denver. Utah Route 128 goes from Moab, Utah, to Interstate 70 just west of the Colorado border, at times following the path of the Colorado River.
We were held up by construction work at the route’s start in Moab, though, so after an hour’s drive, we had only gone about 20 miles on the 44-mile road. By that point, both of us were tired from the drive and the morning’s exertions. On impulse, Rob pulled off the highway onto a gravel road, following a sign for Fisher Towers.
That bumpy road certainly woke us up.
The two-mile road got bumpier as our little sedan went along, finally depositing us at a parking area. We were the only non-SUV there.
We stepped out to stretch our legs and take a few photos. The harsh noon light didn’t do our cameras any favors, but for me it reinforced the unsettling feeling that we were in the middle of nowhere, hemmed in by ominously dark, craggy rock formations. It was beautiful, certainly, but in a forbidding kind of way.
